What is a Tonsillectomy?
Am I a Good Candidate for a Tonsillectomy?
You may be a candidate for a tonsillectomy if you experience one of the following conditions:
- Chronic Tonsillitis: Recurring episodes of tonsillitis that occur at least seven times in one year, five times a year for two years, or three times a year over three years.
- Enlarged Tonsils: Some patients have abnormally large tonsils that obstruct their airway, causing sleep apnea, difficulty breathing, or problems swallowing.
- Sleep Apnea Due to Tonsils: Enlarged tonsils can contribute to obstructive sleep apnea, particularly when tissues in the back of the throat relax during sleep.
Types of Tonsillectomy Surgeries in Los Angeles
At Daneshrad Clinic, we offer several types of tonsillectomy procedures tailored to each patient’s unique needs, with two convenient locations in Santa Monica and Torrance:
- Cold Knife Dissection: The tonsils are removed using a traditional scalpel (knife) under general anesthesia. Recovery typically takes about two weeks.
- Electrocautery: In this procedure, heat removes the tonsils and simultaneously cauterizes the area to minimize bleeding. The recovery may be more painful due to the heat used.
- Coblation: Radio waves are used to ionize saline and create an energized field that cuts through the tonsils without using heat, resulting in less post-surgery pain and faster healing.
- Microdebrider: This technique is used for a partial tonsillectomy. The microdebrider shaves off the enlarged portion of the tonsil while leaving some tissue intact, often reducing recovery time and discomfort.
- Harmonic Scalpel: Ultrasonic vibrations cut and cauterize the tissue with minimal heat, reducing damage to surrounding tissue.
- Laser Ablation: A handheld laser device removes or reduces tonsil volume, which is particularly helpful for patients with chronic tonsillitis or enlarged tonsils.
Benefits of a Tonsillectomy
A tonsillectomy offers many benefits for patients experiencing chronic tonsil-related issues, including:
- Relief from chronic tonsillitis and frequent throat infections.
- Improved breathing, especially for those with obstructive sleep apnea.
- Reduction in sleep disturbances caused by enlarged tonsils.
- Decreased frequency of sore throats, bad breath, and other symptoms linked to tonsillitis,
- Enhanced overall quality of life due to improved airway function.
What to Expect During a Tonsillectomy in Los Angeles
A tonsillectomy is performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the chosen surgical method. The procedure typically lasts about an hour; most patients can return home the same day. Recovery generally takes around two weeks, and patients are advised to rest, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous activities. Soft, non-irritating foods like ice cream and pudding are recommended to avoid irritating the throat.
