What are sinus tumors?

Table of Contents

At Daneshrad Clinic, Dr. Payam Daneshrad sees patients of all varieties who are dealing with concerns of the face, ear, nose, or throat. One condition that can often go undiagnosed is that of sinus tumors. Sinus tumors are best described as growths in the sinus cavities. These tumors can be cancerous, which means that they should be evaluated and biopsied in their earliest stages to determine if treatment is required.

What are the symptoms of a sinus tumor?

A sinus tumor often goes undiagnosed as the symptoms of a sinus tumor closely mimic that of a sinus infection. They can cause:

  • Congestion
  • Decreased sense of smell
  • Decreased sense of taste
  • Bleeding
  • Difficult breathing
  • Pain/discomfort

When a patient presents with these symptoms, a professional may assume that a sinus infection has developed. Without further evaluation, the tumor may go undiagnosed until later stages which can be concerning if the tumor is cancerous. While most tumors are benign (non-cancerous), it is beneficial to have them removed if they are causing chronic problems for the patient.

How is a sinus tumor diagnosed?

In addition to discussing the symptoms patients are experiencing, Dr. Payam Daneshrad may also consider special testing or examinations to determine if patients have a sinus tumor. Diagnostic tools such as CT scans, MRIs, or fiberoptic cameras may be used to evaluate the nose and sinus cavities and get a definitive diagnosis.

What if the tumor is malignant (cancerous)?

Cancerous tumors are often removed with surgery, and may be treated afterwards with radiation therapy and chemotherapy to further destroy the cancer cells and hopefully get the patient into remission.
