Should You Be Worried About a Nosebleed?

Table of Contents

The sight of blood is typically cause for concern. Not only does bleeding signal an injury, it usually signifies a serious one. However, in the case of nosebleeds, most don’t require medical attention and are generally benign.

However, there are some instances when nosebleeds should necessitate an immediate visit to the doctor. Knowing the difference between a harmless nosebleed and a serious one can help you avoid potentially serious complications.

Signs Your Nosebleed May Be Harmless

Nosebleeds are incredibly common. Most people will have at least one sometime in their lifetime. Delicate, small blood vessels can be found within the nose, and because of their relative fragility, these blood vessels can be easily harmed and cause bleeding.

Common causes of harmless nosebleeds are typically:

  • Cold weather, which can dry and crack the inner lining of the nose
  • Irritation or minor injury, such as through consistent nose-blowing
  • Colds or allergies that can irritate the nose
  • Dry air which may dry the inner lining of the nose

Though these causes typically are signs of harmless nosebleeds. The true sign you should look for is the duration of bleeding. Most nosebleeds should resolve themselves within a few minutes. If they don’t, you may need medical attention.

In any case, it can be best to err on the side of caution and visit the doctor, especially if you are suffering from recurrent nosebleeds.

Signs of Serious Nosebleeds

Bleeding accompanied by nausea, headaches, blurred vision, or difficulties with cognition may require immediate medical attention. Coughing or vomiting blood is also a sign to look out for. If nosebleeds follow injury and are accompanied by difficult breathing, seek medical attention.

Again, it may be helpful to err on the side of caution and visit a doctor in case of a nosebleed.
