Understanding Potential Complications During Post-Facelift Recovery

Doctor checking woman’s face after faceliftIf you’re considering getting a facelift, you’re probably excited about the potential of a refreshed, youthful look. But like any surgery, facelifts can incur some complications.

Dr. Payam Daneshrad is a board-certified ENT who specializes in facial plastic surgery in Santa Monica and Torrance, California. With his extensive experience in facelift procedures and aftercare, he and his medical team understand the importance of a well-informed recovery process.

We want you to feel educated not only about the procedure itself but also about the potential risks.

Common Facelift Complications and How to Manage Them

There are a few common aftereffects that facelift patients will most likely experience following surgery.

Swelling: A natural and normal response to surgery, swelling peaks within the first few days and gradually diminishes over the following weeks.

Treatment: Apply cold compresses and keep the head elevated to help reduce swelling. Our team monitors patients closely to ensure the swelling subsides properly.

Bruising: Often accompanies swelling; it’s a common result of the body’s response to surgery and typically appears around the treated area.

Treatment: Bruises usually fade on their own within two to three weeks. We can recommend specific medications to help alleviate bruising and discomfort.

Rare Facelift Complications and Treatment Options

Our team is also prepared to manage the more serious (but less common) risks, including:

Infection: Although infrequent, infections can occur at the incision sites and are signaled by increased redness, warmth, and discomfort.

Treatment: Early detection is key so we can manage it effectively with antibiotics. Our medical team provides vigilant post-operative care to prevent and treat any signs of infection.

Nerve Damage: Rare and typically temporary, nerve damage can result in numbness or changes in sensation near the surgical area.

Treatment: Most nerve damage heals over time. We provide medications to manage symptoms and may recommend physical therapy to support nerve recovery.

Hematoma: This complication involves the collection of blood underneath the skin and can occur shortly after surgery.

Treatment: You may need immediate surgical intervention to remove the blood collection. Our surgical team is prepared to act swiftly to prevent further complications.

Skin Loss: A rare complication where the skin does not heal properly, potentially leading to tissue loss.

Treatment: We address this with wound care and possibly additional surgical procedures to promote healing and minimize scarring.

Risk Factors for Facelift Complications

Certain conditions can increase the likelihood of complications:

  • Age and Skin Condition
  • Smoking
  • Medical Conditions (like high blood pressure or diabetes)
  • Medications (such as blood thinners and NSAIDs)
  • Poor Nutrition
  • Sun Damage

Depending on your situation, we may determine that you are ineligible for a facelift. We’re happy to help you explore alternative options.
